Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the mediation effects of self-efficacy on the knowledge and compliance of handwashing among cosmetology students.
Method: Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 22.0 program. The general characteristics of the subjects, knowledge regarding hand washing, compliance for handwashing, and self-efficacy were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Differences between the variables as per participant characteristics were analyzed using an independent sample t-test. A three-step regression analysis was conducted to verify the effects of self-efficacy in the relationship between hand-washing knowledge and compliance in cosmetology students.
Results: Cosmetology students who received education regarding hand washing exhibited higher knowledge and compliance for handwashing. Higher knowledge of hand washing and higher self-efficacy were associated with a higher degree of handwashing; self-efficacy was mediated by hand washing.
Conclusion: Self-efficacy mediated the effects of handwashing in students of a cosmetology college. We believe that the provision of education regarding handwashing will increase the efficacy and performance of handwashing in students.
